We feel your child’s first school experience should be a comfortable and positive experience. The week before your child begins attending HSH, we will schedule a few visiting days for you and your child. During these visits, you and your child will have the opportunity to become better acquainted with the environment, teachers, and other children. Your child’s teacher will observe your child and will guide the rest of your child’s adjustment into school.
All of our teachers have a minimum of 12 ECE units. Most of our teachers have 27 unit ECE certificates, AA, and Bachelor degrees. Our children are interacting with a large group of children for the first time. With that in mind, teachers focus on helping the children in their class learn to work together with their friends and help take care of each other. We use positive reinforcement and modeling techniques to encourage positive behavior. If a child becomes aggressive, our teachers discuss the problem in a soft, calm voice with the children involved. The children are encouraged to come up with a solution and to help take care of their friend. Teachers will discuss any continual behavioral concerns with the child’s parents.
Our teachers are available on a daily basis to answer questions about your child’s day. Each center has a parent board at the entrance. This board is kept current with up to date information regarding upcoming events. Our school participates in documentation via digital photos, children’s portfolios and daily posting of “News of the Day”. This includes snap shots of your child’s day and dialogue explaining the activities that were presented throughout the day. We also schedule 2 conferences per year. The Preschool and Toddler Center teachers are provided cell phones to communicate with parents as needed during the school day. We use email for special announcements and we also have a parents-only Facebook page that is used to keep you updated.
We have a 1 week summer break at the end of July, a 2 ½ week winter break, and we celebrate all of the major holidays.
